About

Koan Farms was started in 2015 with the mission to produce and distribute vegetables that improve the health of the soil, the health of the individual and help our community to become an ecosystem.

We currently produce on three-quarters of an acre of land. Our farm would certainly be classified as a "micro-farm," yet despite our land "limitations" we were able to grow about 5,000 pounds of food in the 2016 season.

We also work with Caseus Fromagerie & Bistro, an incredible restaurant in New Haven, check them out here

Farm Manager : Ethan Schneider

Ethan has been involved with local agricultural production since 2011. He has worked on a variety of different farms from California to Pennsylvania. He was born and raised in Fairfield county and returned to Connecticut to farm in 2013. In his experiences he has raised a diversity of market and CSA vegetables, chickens, goats and pigs. His passion for hard work and getting dirty are the driving force behind his love for farming.

CROPS WE GROW

A quick note.

Last year was our first season growing on our own. The crops were bountiful and beautiful, but lacked "pizzazz". We feel that we could have done a better job growing a more diverse and unique crop set. So this year we are investing more money in seeds, utilizing more land and diversifying our crop list 30% by adding in crops and varieties. With every year there will be crop failures and mistakes made, but we hope by improving our crop list and investing more in seeds we can continue to improve.

We source our seed from:

PRIMARY CROPS

  • Arugula
  • Carrots

  • Cherry Tomatoes

  • Cucumbers

  • Eggplant

  • Head Lettuce

  • Heirloom Tomatoes

  • Kale

  • Radish

  • Scallions

  • Summer Squash

SECONDARY CROPS

  • Beets

  • Bell Peppers

  • Broccoli

  • Bush Beans

  • Cabbage

2017 Vegetable Share

First and foremost, thanks to all our 2016 CSA! We are excited to have you back for an even more bountiful and diverse 2017 Summer.   Last year was such a productive and awesome year, but there is always more to learn and improvements to make.

General Info

We are a micro-farm located in Woodbridge CT growing and distributing organically and sustainably produced vegetables through our Vegetable Share program.

Our vegetable share program is a subscription-based model to getting yourself local food and supporting your local farmer. By subscribing to the expected harvest of 20 weeks of bounty, you receive a weekly bag of diverse, seasonal, sustainable produce.

The vegetable share program starts sometime between June 1st and 15th and last 20 weeks. The start date is variable based on spring weather conditions (how soon the soil is dry enough to work). We will know our start date by May 14th.

We have five set pick ups for you to choose from:

  • Tuesdays on the farm 2-7pm
  • Wednesdays in Trumbull (Two locations, Nichols & Tashua) (+$100)

Shares

Large Share

$27.50/wk, $550

This share is more a kin to a classic veggie share. It comes with diverse and consistent bounty. It is important that you are prepared to eat or preserve a good amount of fresh produce throughout the season.

Small Share

$15/wk, $300

This share is best described as an "Individual" share. We found that the typical bounty of a vegetable share is a little intimidating for one person, empty nesters or some veggie share rookies.

Shearwater Coffee Add-on*

Small Share - $10/wk, $200

Large Share - $20/wk, $400

We will be offering an available coffee add-on! The small and large share will be a half a pound and a whole pound respectively. You will receive a custom medium bodied blend of freshly roasted organic coffee.

"Shearwater’s vision started with our founder Ed Freedman’s passion for organic coffee, his attention to detail and commitment to sustainability. When Shearwater opened of our family owned business in 2013, we were the only small batch organic coffee roaster in Fairfield County, Connecticut."

*Coffee add-on is available for both small or large veggie shares.
